Inhabited since prehistory, over the centuries Peschiera has had great strategic mili- tary importance, during several periods of foreign domination, from Roman times until the unification of Italy by the Kingdom of Savoy.
The first military buildings were erected by the Scala lordship, however today’s pentagonal form of the village is attributed to the Venetian Republic, also called the Serenissima.
After the Venetians, important fortifications were erected by the French and during the Austrian-Hungarian rule. In addition to its natural beauty, with its canals and Mincio River, Peschiera del Garda attracts a great number of tourists due to the nearby amusement parks, ranking among the most important in Italy, of which number one is definitely Gardaland.
